May Starts the Rural Health Season

The month of Maybegins the fairs and festival season throughout central Virginia. Last year, the Rural Health Mobile from McGuire VA Medical Center attended over 20 outreach events to provide health education and enrollment services to Veterans living in rural communities. “We are excited about the 2011 season said Charles Johnson, Enrollment Specialist. Last summer, we were able to reach new Veterans that had no idea they could apply for healthcare benefits with the VA.” The Rural Health Mobile team will continue to partner at some events with the Wounded Warriors Project, our Women’s Health Program and the MyHealtheVet team to provide a suite of services and health education materials. Outreach - McGuire VAMC uses a 3 pronged approach to outreach. 1. The team engage veterans, family members and care takers during an event. Potential new Veterans are asked to complete a 10-10EZ application during the initial engagement. 2. Involves the use of local media to help us find Veterans living in rural communities and provide ongoing messages about VA healthcare to saturate and spark interest within veterans to seek VA healthcare. 3. We educate our clinical providers in all areas of service on classifications for Veterans and VA related service connection conditions (existing or potential) and provide information at clinic check out for information to benefits officers for these services. Enrollment - Evolved into a “must have service” for every outreach event McGuire VAMC attends. Enrollment Clerks work hard to make sure each Veteran is aware of their benefits. Given the difficult economic times over the past few years, a lot of men and women are out of work and looking for ways to get health benefits.
