Patriot's Day in Cumberland County
American Revolutionary War re-enactment soldiers participate in Cumberland Patriot’s Day.
Cumberland's Patriot Day Festival couldn't be stopped by wind or rain on Saturday. The annual festival was moved indoors to the school system's Middle and High School Complex and activities went on as scheduled. Yes, it was Cumberland County, Virginia at the famous, Effingham Tavern, where Carter H. Harrison instructed elected delegates of this County to vote for independence from the British government at the Virginia Convention of May 6, 1776. Today, Cumberland is home to more than 550 Veterans. Less than half are enrolled for VA healthcare benefits, so the Rural Health team from McGuire Veterans Medical Center was on hand to assist Veterans with the application process and to provide health education. The goal of the Rural Health team is to build strong community bridges while bringing healthcare services to Veterans living in rural areas of central Virginia. “We met with many Veterans that were not aware of the Veterans Health Administration or healthcare benefits”, says Sharon Rhone, Program Integrator for the Rural Health team. |
