The research program is clinically oriented, draws from a panel of 37,000 patients and conducts Phase 1-4 inpatient and outpatient studies.  The program is supported by an independent investigational pharmacy and an IRB that meets weekly.  Seventy investigators conduct over 270 research studies.  Clinical research focus areas include hepatitis C, diabetes and lipid disorders, while basic research focus areas include molecular oncology, taste, regulation of bile acids and biliary cholesterol, and the hormonal function of fat cells.  The Medical Center also participates in the DoD/VA Brain Injury research program and is one of four VA Polytrauma Centers.  The Richmond research program has been awarded full accreditation by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
