About the Program
The Geriatrics and Extended Care Program at the Richmond VAMC is composed of four areas —
- Community Living Center (CLC)
- Home and Community Care (HCC)
- Geriatrics Health Care Center (GHCC)
- Palliative Care
Services Offered
Nursing Home Care Unit (NHCU)
NHCU services include —
- occupational therapy
- physical therapy
- recration therapy
- kinesiotherapy
- pallative care
- specialized services to veterans in need of rehabilitation following amputation, stroke, and traumatic brain injury
- Care following surgery and/or lengthy hospitalizations before returning to independent living
Home and Community Care (ECC)
HCC consists of programs that manage care in veterans homes and community settings. Services include —
- home-based primary care
- homemaker homehealth aide
- adult day health care
- community nursing home care
- skilled and unskilled home care
- home hospice care
Geriatrics Health Care Center (GHCC)
The GHCC consists of two services: geriatric outpatient primary care and geriatric evaluation and management, which includes a comprehensive geriatric assessment.
Hospice
The goals of hospice care are accomplished by offering services and care to manage pain and any other symptoms that cause discomfort or distress, create a comfortable environment for the patient, allow the patient to be close to family and loved ones during the dying process, give relief to the patient's caregivers, and offer counseling for the patient and those close to the patient.
