About the Program
The Southeast Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Center (PADRECC) at Richmond VAMC serves the southeastern region of the United States as a referral center providing comprehensive care to patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. There are 5 other PADRECCs located at other VAMCs around the country (Philadelphia, Houston, West Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland) and many satellite Consortium Centers at other VAMCs. The PADRECC offers a variety of clinical care services, education, and research opportunities for patients with:
- Parkinson's disease
- essential tremor
- dystonia
- other movement disorders
Services Offered
Services offered by the Center include:
- physician consultation for movement disorders and medication management
- multidisciplinary assessment and treatment by a neurologist specializing in movement disorders, registered nurses, rehabilitation physicians, a neuropsychologist, neurosurgeon, and referral to other services as needed
- extensive evaluation and pre-operative testing to determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate for surgical treatment
- surgical treatment called Deep Brain Stimulation
- support groups for patients and caregivers
- educational materials and programs
- telemedicine visits
