Richmond VAMC: an Epilepsy Center of Excellence
Epilepsy Center of Excellence (ECoE)
Northeast (Richmond)
In 2008, VA established 16 specialty sites, which are linked to form 4 regional centers which network to provide coordinated services for veterans with seizure disorders and epilepsy. The Epilepsy Centers of Excellence (ECOE) were charged with improving the health and well-being of Veterans with epilepsy and other seizure disorders by integrating clinical care, outreach, research and education.
The Northeast centers are located in Richmond, Baltimore and West Haven. Core epilepsy services provided at the Richmond McGuire VAMC include comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care, video-eeg monitoring, neuroradiology, epilepsy surgery, rehabilitation and educational services.
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is co-located within the Polytrauma Unit in order to help with the diagnosis and treatment of seizures in those who have suffered a traumatic head injury. Services available include continuous video-eeg recording of seizures using scalp or intracranial electrodes, confirmation of seizure/epilepsy, identification of non-epileptic events, identification of seizure focus, differentiation and classification of seizure types and epilepsy syndromes, antiepileptic drug evaluation, evaluation of patient for placement of Vagus Nerve Stimulator, deep brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery and education for inpatients and caregivers.
If you are a veteran with seizures and are interested in visiting our Epilepsy Center, please speak to your local primary care physician who can determine if you will benefit from a visit with us and can help arrange an appointment. If you are already a patient at our center, you may call us directly.
