Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center - Richmond, VA
Mission: To enhance Veterans’ access to specialty services and improve quality of care within Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation through the use of Telehealth.
TeleRehabilitation uses Telehealth technologies to diagnose, evaluate, and manage health care for Veterans of all ages with physical and/or cognitive impairment and disability. TeleRehabilitation is quickly becoming recognized as an exciting alternative model of care that can assist Veterans to achieve their goals and maximize independence and quality of life.
Experience with TeleRehabilitation has shown that it expedites access to care, improves clinical communication and transitions between locations of care and eliminates unnecessary travel for Veterans and their families. The use of TeleRehabilitation can extend from rehabilitation specialists at medical centers to rural Community Based Outreach Clinics (CBOCs), the Veteran’s home and facilities outside VA; thus providing increased access to care. Video teleconferencing provides a convenient alternative for providing rehabilitation care for Veterans, especially for those who live in rural areas or who have difficulties traveling outside their home.
During TeleRehabilitation appointments, clinicians connect with Veterans in their homes, CBOCs or facilities outside VA. Providers can evaluate, follow-up and observe how Veterans participate in activities of daily living, community living skills, work, leisure and social participation. They can also observe how the home environment may be modified to facilitate greater independence.
